The Food and Drug Administration has officially declared, for the first time, that a lab-grown meat product developed by a California company, Upside Foods, is safe for human consumption. Upside Foods, formerly known as Memphis Meats, received FDA approval. This approval allows the use of animal cell culture technology to extract live cells from chickens, cultivating them in a controlled environment for the production of food. In simpler terms, cell cultured meat has finally received the green light!
Following thorough production evaluations and multiple studies on cultured material from Upside Foods, there are no more doubts about the safety of this meat product, particularly chicken fillet. The company will be able to introduce its products to the market after USDA inspection—a mere formality compared to this significant achievement.

The global cultured meat industry, backed by over $2 billion in investment, will play a vital role in creating a more sustainable food system and addressing climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from animal food production.
While the FDA’s safety approval specifically applies to Upside’s products, the agency expressed its willingness to collaborate with other companies developing cultured animal cell feed and manufacturing processes. Discussions are ongoing with various firms about different products made from cultured animal cells, including seafood cells.
